Coming Soon – June 2015

Welcome to Coming Soon, highlighting the most highly anticipated movies of the coming month and occasionally movies that some may not be fully aware of. So keep an eye out for the following movies at your local cinema.

HIGHLY ANTICIPATED

Spy
June 4th
Jurassic World
June 11th
Entourage
June 11th

Spy

Director: Paul Feig
Cast:
Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne
Links: IMDb, Trailer
Official synopsis: A desk-bound CIA analyst volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent diabolical global disaster.

Why interested?: Well this is kind of cheating but I actually already seen Spy in a pre-premiere show. I didn’t really have high hopes for it because I was getting tired of the repetitious comedy of Melissa McCarthy. Fortunately, it really surprised me because it did not depend solely on McCarthy to deliver the jokes. Comedy wise everyone in this movie has time shine, none more brighter than Jason Statham. Yes, Jason Statham is hilarious! I’ll be posting my review soon.

Jurassic World

Director: Colin Trevorrow
Cast:
Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Judy Greer, Nick Robinson, Ty Simpkins
Links: IMDb, Trailer
Official synopsis: Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park (1993), Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor’s interest, which backfires horribly.

Why interested?: Jurassic Park is one the best movies of all time, filled to the brim with iconic scenes and soundtrack. The following sequels did not really live up to the same standard, and so Jurassic World offers a new opportunity to capture the same awe and magic of the original. I like the fact that I don’t know much about the plot, so just the curiosity on top of the Jurassic franchise name got me to reserve the tickets to the movie already.

Entourage

Director: Doug Ellin
Cast:
Kevin Connolly, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrera, Jeremy Piven
Links: IMDb, Trailer
Official synopsis: Movie star Vincent Chase, together with his boys Eric, Turtle, and Johnny, are back – and back in business with super agent-turned-studio head Ari Gold.

Why interested?: Full disclosure, I have never seen a single episode of Entourage. So why am I interested? Simply because the fans of the show are so excited. Also there is a huge list of guest-star appearances that could lead to some funny cameos. If people loved living the Hollywood life vicariously through this cast for seasons, a couple of hours of a movie is a good window to do the same. Who knows, if Entourage ends being a good movie I might give the show a shot.

BELOW THE RADAR

Unfriended
June 4th
Age of Adaline
June 18th

Unfriended

Director: Levan Gabriadze
Cast:
Heather Sossaman, Matthew Bohrer, Courtney Halverson
Links: IMDb, Trailer
Official synopsis: A group of online chat room friends find themselves haunted by a mysterious, supernatural force using the account of their dead friend.

Why interested?: Back in my days of high-school, I’d come back home to log onto the MSN messenger and continue chatting with my friends. It was such a huge part of my after-school life, a haunted movie about that would have definitely messed with me. Nowadays with social media being bigger and ever-growing it was only a matter of time that the horror genre used it as some sort of gimmick. I just hope it doesn’t feel like a gimmick.

Age of Adaline

Director: Lee Toland Krieger
Cast:
Blake Lively, Michael Huisman, Harrison Ford
Links: IMDb, Trailer
Official synopsis: A young woman, born at the turn of the 20th century, is rendered ageless after an accident. After many solitary years, she meets a man who complicates the eternal life she has settled into.

Why interested?: This is a bit of tricky one because I have never seen Blake Lively in a serious dramatic role. At the same time, that’s a welcome change when an actor/actress tries something different. The only obstacle it has is to avoid feeling like a Benjamin Button rip-off. It has already released in USA, and seems to have pretty good buzz. So Age of Adaline may just be worth a watch.
